Abstract

Impregnation of textile webs, e.g. mercerizing, dyeing or dressing, wherein the web (1) passes through a water vapour atmosphere maintained at least 95 DEG C directly above the surface of the impregnating medium (9), so that the formation of a transition zone between the colder impregnating medium and the water vapour atmosphere is at least largely avoided. There is provided a channel (5), which immediately adjoins a vapour treatment space (3) and which is equipped with vapour nozzles (4) and/or heaters (10). A vapour stream is directed from ducts 11 onto the surface of the impregnating medium (9). The channel (5) includes means for conducting the blown-in vapour away. Impregnating medium is constantly supplied from pipes (13) at the point of immersion. <IMAGE>
