Abstract

The lever operated controller is used on sewing machine speed controls. The operating arm (15) is attached through a spindle (6) to an external lever (7) which is then linked to a foot pedal or similar drive. The operating arm varies the position of an electrical controller (23). On the spindle (6) is a coil spring (28) with extended ends (30, 31) which engage with projections on the operating arm (15). The free ends also pass through slots in a fixed guide plate (37) attached to the controller housing (3). The slot arrangement is such that with no force applied to the lever the spring holds the operating arm in a position corresponding to controller null. When pressure is applied to the lever the projection on the arm transfers movement to the spring extension, thus producing a counter pressure from the spring. The spring returns the controller to null when the lever is released. The slot in the guide plate also limits the maximum extent of operating arm travel.
