Abstract

Semi-continuous casting of metals with long freezing ranges is carried out by periodically admitting molten metal through the base of the mould. The top of the mould is closed with a priming plate. When the solidified skin against the mould has reached the required thickness the plate is raised, and more liquid metal admitted to fill the space beneath. During each filling excess metal is introduced and rises through the priming plate under increased pressure. Flow is reversed at least once by a higher downward pressure. Solidification is completed under combined pressure from above and below. Keeping the molten metal in motion relative to the solidified skin prevents segregation, which may be a problem with long freezing ranges e.g. in aluminium alloys. Putting it under pressure also aids soundness during solidification. The excess metal per stage may be between 0.1 and 0.9 times the effective volume of the mould. The admission pressure of the molten metal may be increased 1.1 to 15.0 times.
