Abstract

Molten metal is treated by gas injection in a ladle having in its base a combined tuyere and closable discharge gate valve assembly. The assembly includes a body contg. a gas inlet pipe, a discharge spout and a closure member, each of which may be aligned with the discharge nozzle of the ladle by lateral movements of the body. The injected gas contains an entrained reagent. The closure portion of the body may include a porous plug through which a stirring gas may be introduced after injection of the reagent. The gas may be air, nitrogen, argon, CO, CO2 natural gas or other hydrocarbon. Improved utilization of the reagent is attained of additions from above the bath. Problems associated with lance operation are avoided.
