Abstract

Fabrics are piece dried by the exhaust process, the dye is first added to the bath at dyeing temp. and its concn. during the exhaust phase is less than 10% (pref. 0.1-1%) of the usual initial concn. The dye concn. is kept at just over (pref. not more than twice) the respective equilibrium concn. in a fully-exhausted bath, by continuous addn. of a liquid dye concentrate to the circulating dye liquor. Used for dyeing of continuous lengths of fabric, esp. in machines using 'short' dye baths, i.e. ratios of dye liquor to fabric of 10:1 or less. Esp. suitable for dyeing polyester fibres, opt. in blends with staple rayon, cotton or wool, under high temp. conditions. Levelness of shade and depth is greatly improved and coagulation of the dye in the bath prevented. Very 'short' liquor ratios of 3-6:1 can be used and dyes with high affinity and exhaust rates, allowing dyeing times to be further reduced. Since rate of exhaustion is controlled by dye addn. and not by heating rate, very fast heating e.g. with high pressure steam, may be used.
