Abstract

The sepn. of aromatic (b.p. 80-175 degrees C) from hydrocarbon mixts. by extractive distn. is carried out by (a) introducing the hydrocarbon feed at the middle of the extn. column, (b) introducing a mixt. of H2O and a water-miscible organic solvent (b.pt. >=200 degrees C) into the upper part of the column, (c) introducing reflux hydrocarbons at the bottom of the column, (d) contacting the resulting extract with steam in a distn. column to obtain a distillate contg. reflux hydrocarbons and H2O, a side-stream contg. aromatics and H2O, and a bottom product contg. the solvent and H2O, (e) contacting the raffinate (aliphatics) from the extraction column with the aq. phase from step (f) to obtain a raffinate phase from (e) with the side-stream H2O from the stream-distn. column to obtain a raffinate phase and an aq. phase, (g) contacting the distillate H2O from the steam-distn. column with a portion (0.1-5 wt %) of the aromatic side-stream (contg. >=95 wt % of aromatics) from the steam-distn. column to obtain an aromatics phase and an aq. phase, (h) contacting the rest of the aromatic side-stream with the aq. phase from (g) to obtain an aromatics phase and an aq. phase, (i) recycling the aq. phase from (e) to the middle part of the extn. column, (j) recycling the aq. phase from (h) to the steam-distn. zone for conversion into steam, (k) recycling the distillate hydrocarbons and the bottom product from the steam-distn. column as reflux and solvent/H2O mixt. respectively to steps (c) and (b),and (1) recovering aromatics from step (h) and aliphatic raffinate from step (f).
