Abstract

In a steel-making process in which oxidation of elements other than C is monitored and regulated, argon or another inert gas and/or O2 contained in the fumes leaving the converter is (are) recuperated and re-used in the same steel making process. The process is carried out in stages comprising (a) analysing gases leaving the converter after eliminating dust, (b) eliminating CO2 and other gases or vapours which can be easily eliminated from the fumes, (c) dividing the gas into a first and second stream, (d) mixing the first stream with >=1 gas chosen from Ar and O2, and (e) supplying the first current after mixing to the converter tuyere for blowing into the melt. Method allows gases from decarburation to be re-used in the same melt.
