The substrate to be coated is a high alloy steel pref. an alloy contg. >=10 wt.% Ni, Cr or Ni+Cr, and Mo. In the case of the substrate being stainless steel, the surface is coated with a thin layer of an oxide or a compd. of a transition metal of pgs. IIIb - IIb which will dissociate below the alloying temp. of the substrate and transition metal, and is then heated to the alloying temp. after which the ceramic coating is applied by electrophoresis. PRef. a water soluble compd. of the transition metal is used. The stainless steel article is contacted with an aq. soln. contg. 0.5-10 wt.% of the transition metal compd. at 52-93 degrees C for 15 sec. to 30 min. Pref. an oxide of compd. of a metal chosen from Mo, Cr, Co, Cu, Mn, V, Fr, Ni, Zn, W, espec. Mo may be used for the intermediate layer.
