Abstract

A method of making and structurally modifying, at increase speed, polymer filaments and sheets is as follows: a molten, crystalline polymer suitable for spinning is extruded through a nozzle to form a melted filaments; these are passed longitudinally through a solidi cation zone in a gas (air) atmosphere at a temp. (10-40 degrees C) below the solidification temperature, thus giving solid filaments or sheets; this product is passed longitudinally through a conditioning zone in a gas (air) atmosphere at a temp. above solidification temp. but below fusion temp. at a speed such that the residence time is 0.0001-0.8 (0.03-0.09) seconds, thus obtaining substantial crystallisation of the material; the product is drawn out of the conditioning zone at a speed of 1,000-6,000 (2,500-3,500) metres/minute, under a tension of 0.1-1.0 g/denier. The entire process is carried out without any interruption to the tension over the length of the material from the spining nozzle to the drawing point at exit from the conditioning zone.
