Description

a* naan ROOF CONSTRUCTION The present invention relates to a novel roof construction.
It is known to use as roofing elements so called "Canalette". These Canalette are rather thin sheet elements, having two oppositely disposed marginal portions and, as has been indicated, are used as roofing ie. covering elements, but not as structural elements.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a construction wherein the roof, erected with the aid of the above named elements is self supporting, i.e. need not be supported by vertical columns, although it may be of a considerable span.
According to the invention, the new roof construction com prises a member which is denominated in the following description or pres tressed as a "Quoin-Beam" such beam being preferably reinforced/concrete and having at its two opposite lengthwise sides recesses adapted to receive within them the marginal portions of Canalette elements with the upturned flanges of the Canalette elements extending from the said recess, substantially at right angle thereto, the said construction further comprising a preferably metallic beam to form the upper most edge of a wall of the building on which the roof is to be laid - or alternatively resting on columns (in those cases where the structure is an open shed)-, an upwardly extending short arm being fixedly connected to said metallic beam and having a laterally out jutting extension which at its free end carries a longitudinally extending angle profile, adapted to receive and hold the marginal portion of the Canalette opposite that por-L tion which is held in the recess of the said quoin-beam.
\ The invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a building provided with the new roof construction, while Figure 2 is an underneath, fractional view of the roof. Figure 3 shows on a larger scale an elevational section through the quoin-beam with the marginal portions of Canalette resting thereon, while Figure 4 is an elevational, sectional view - also in fraction -illustrating the top of a wall of a building on which the outer edge of the roof rests.
Turning first to Figure 1; on foundation members 1, of whatever kind are erected walls 2 (or alternatively - at distances from one another a row of columns intended to carry the roof) . The roof itself is composed of the conventional Canalette members 3 which rest on the quoin-beam 4, forming the peak of the roof and which are supported at 5, i.e. at the top of the wall or the columns 2. Conventional tie rods 6 extend between the oppositely disposed walls 2 (or the columns respectively) , turn buckles 7 being provided in a conventional manner.
Turning now to Figure 2, the quoin-beam 4 extends the whole length of the building and as can be seen , in addition to the tie rods, further diagonal ties 8 are provided, also in a conventional manner. The top of the end walls of the structure indicated by the numeral 20 is strengthened in a conventional way as seen in Figure 2.
So far the arrangement has been described without going Into details of the quoin-beam and the outer supports for the Canalette members. These details will now be described with reference to Figures 3 and 4: The quoin-beam indicated as a whole by the numeral 4 is cast concrete, reinforced in a conventional manner by means of steel rods. The beam 4 has throuh oin cavities 40 which reduce beam 4 has - on each side a recess 41. The bottom of the recess is oblique and its obliquity, or angular relation to the horizontal is chosen in accordance with the gradient of the roo .
The Canalette 3 rest with their upper marginal portions on the wooden or bottom of the recess 41 with the interposition *f /plastic strips 42 which on the one hand serve as tightening means and also cushion the contact between the concrete of the beam 4 and the edges of the Canalette 3. The Canalette members are held against sliding off the beam by means of hooks 43 which engage in a central longitudinal groove 44 at the underside of the beam 4, and which extend around the sides of the beam 4 and pass through holes in the Canalette 3. The ends of the hooks 43 are screw threaded at 43a, nuts 45 being screwed onto the screw threaded part, thus firmly holding the Canalette and also pressing them down onto the strips 42. A channel member of tin sheet or asbestos cement, indicated as a whole by the numeral 46, covers the quoin-beam and the marginal portions of the members 3 and presents rain from penetrating.
Turning now to Figure 4: The wall 2 has at its upper edge inserted into it a steel beam 20 which is of C or U or any other appropriate profile. The rear side of beam 20 is flushowith the upper edge of the wall 2. Welded to the beam 20 and extending upwardly is a short arm 21 from which extends laterally an extension 22, equally connected to the arm 21 by welding. The extension 22 carries at its outer, free end an angle profile 23, the open-side of which is directed towards the roof. The Canalette member 3 which rests with its upper marginal portion on the quoin beam 4 id teceived with its lower marginal portion at the upper side thereof in the angle 23 Bno* $3 ttiul prevented from sliding down.
Those skilled in the art will understand that the Canal©tte members being firmly held and restricted between the quoin member 4 and the angle 23 become self bearing and need not be supported by upright columns within the confines of the building; neither will it be necessary to prepare a carrying lattice or framework on which the Ganalette members are laid out and by which they are carried.
