Claims

What we claim Is :

1. Pattern recognition apparatus, comprising: sensing means for developing a plurality of signals in response to a presented pattern containing characteristic points which are to be identified, conversion means responsive to said signals for converting said pattern into a binary image having many levels of gray scale data, storage means for temporarily storing in a predetermined sequence portions of said data, means for comparing and averaging various portions of the data in said storage means for converting said gray scale data into a one-bit binary image which has been corrected for imperfections in said presented pattern, means for storing the one-bit binary image which has been corrected for image imperfections, means for transferring from the storage means to a shift register only the portions of said one-bit binary image that are contiguous to a predetermined set of coordinates in the total instantaneous image area, means connected to said shift register for detecting and determining values indicative of various geometric properties of said contiguous portions of said image and comparing the same with a plurality of predetermined threshold values, equivalent data detector and combiner means operatively connected with said value detecting and determining means for merging multiple of said detected values of the same portion of the image, and characteristic point storage means operatively connected to said equivalent data detector and combiner means by a control circuit for receiving under control of said control circuit coordinate and angular positions of said contiguous portions of said image which fall within said threshold values.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising means for determining from said characteristic point storage means which of said contiguous portions have substantially the same coordinates .

The apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said means for comparing and averaging includes means effective to compare the average value of each of a plurality of sets of points corresponding to the pattern with the average ^alue of all of said sets in said storage means, each set having a central point as one of its points in said storage means, said central point being converted to a one-bit binary image that is a function of said average of each set and said average of all sets.

The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said comparing and averaging means includes slit filters arranged in radial spoke-like fashion in relation to the center point of an instantaneous image in said storage means for providing a dynamic average value useful in converting said central point to said one-bit binary image.

The apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said means for transferring comprises a transfer circuit for transferring from said storing means to said shift register four instantaneous center points of said one-bit bindary image, and a plurality of logic circuits responsive to the value of additional points in said one-bit binary image and transferring only those points of like value,

6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein each of said logic circuits operate simultaneously.
