Abstract
1415893 Tobacco substitutes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD 23 July 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40324/72 Heading A2C [Also in Division C3] Tobacco substitutes are made by subjecting carbohydrate material to a catalysed thermal degradation at a temperature above 250C until the weight of solid residue is from 50 to 90%of the weight of the original carbohydrate material. The carbohydrate material may be cellulose or starch and preferred catalysts are strong acids or salts of a strong acid and a weak base. The thermally degraded carbohydrate may be extruded as a filament on a tape and subsequently shredded to form tobacco-simulated material. Nicotine, organic esters, essential oils, menthol, tonka bean or vanillin may be added as may be glycerol and glycols as humectants and inorganic salts to induce commercially acceptable burning rates.

Claims (11)
1. ! In a process' for the production of a tobacco substitute wherein a carbohydrate is subjected to catalytic thermal degradation to obtain a residue having a weight of 50 to 90% of the weight of the original carbohydrate and said residue is then fabricated with the aid of a binder, the modification which comprises carrying out the degradation at a temperature significantly above 250°C up to 300°C avoiding significant formation of anhydrosugar and smaller units.
2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the weight of the solid residue is from 65 to 90% of the weight of the original carbohydrate.
3. Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein the carbohydrate material is cellulose. .
4. : · ' Process according to either of claims 1-2 wherein the carbohydrate' material is starch.
5. Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein • the catalyst employed in the thermal degradation is a strong acid or a salt of a strong acid with a weak base. \·
6. Process according to claim 5 wherein the catalyst employed is ammonium sulphamate.
7. 1 ' Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein the catalyst in the thermal degradation Step is present in an amount ran- ' ging from 1 to 20% by weight of the carboydrate material.
8. Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein carbohydrate material in sheet or pwwder form is first impregnated with a solution of catalyst and dried before said1 catalytic thermal degradation'*
9. The process according to claim 1 substantially as described in any one of the preceding Examples., 43015/2
10. A smoking material manufactured by the process of any of the preceding claims.
11. A smoking material according to claim 10 incorporating from 40 to 65% by weight of inorganic filler so chosen as to impart an acceptable combustion rate to the mixture.
