Abstract

1299296 Tobacco substitutes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 13860/70 Heading A2C A smoking mixture comprises (a) as smokeprodlucing fuel a solid organic combustible material other than tobacco, (b) a harmless inorganic filler, and (c) sufficient binder to enable the mixture to be fabricated, said filler being present in a proportion of 40-65% by weight of the mixture and the combination of cations and anions in the filler being such as to impart a commercially acceptable burning rate to the mixture. Preferably the balance of anions and cations is effected by use of mixtures of two or more inorganic salts, but a single inorganic salt may be used. Ingredients exemplified are: combustible materials-thermally degraded cellulose powder, carbon black, sucrose, glucose, α-cellulose powder, alginic acid and thermally degraded sucrose; binders-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, locust bean gum and methyl cellulose; humectant-glycerol; inorganic fillers- CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , CaHPO 4 , FeSO 4 , TiO 2 , Na 2 O.Al 2 O 3 .6SiO 2 (or a precursor Al(OH) 3 , 3MgCO 3 .Mg(OH) 2 .3H 2 O, (MH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , and other ingredients-citric acid and potassium citrate. The mixed materials were formed into a slurry which was cast to form a sheet which was then shredded. Ingredients specified, but not exemplified, include certain aldol condensation products for use as the combustible material which are produced by acid or base catalysed condensation of a compound of formula R<SP>1</SP>COCH 2 CH 2 COR<SP>2</SP> (or a precursor thereof) wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or formyl group. Also specified, but not exemplified, are other suitable binders, humectants, inorganic fillers (which less preferably include inorganic salts of relatively simple organic acids), and further conventional tobacco or smoking mixture additives.
