Abstract
1438565 Filter series for blood PALL CORP 26 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 35751/73 Heading B1D A blocd filter has a series of two sheet filter elements arranged with the coarser element upstream of the finer. The first element is a sheet of open netting of filamentary plastics material of pore size about 800-4000 microns, and the second a sheet of open mesh plastics monofilament fabric of pore size 20-53 microns. In Fig. 1, the series is folded and gripped at two ends by tongues 27 of a plastics housing, the other sides being sealed to the housing which is made from two halves. In Fig. 4 the series is in the form of a collapsed pleated cylinder sealed in a plastics bag along the lines 52 an entry tube 55 being sealed and enclosed within the filter element series, flow being from inside to outside. The elements may be composed of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide or polycarbonate. The finer sheet, i.e. the second may be a woven square mesh having the filaments locked at their insections. The coarser sheet may be extruded, cast or moulded plastics having filaments joined at intersections. A support or spacer may be present between the two elements and may be of the same material as the coarse element having pores at least as large as the coarse element and within the range 800-10000 microns. The materials may be "Dacron" (RTM), Teflon (RTM), "Vexar" (RTM), "KEL-F" (RTM). The filters may be connected by Luer locks or have conduits shaped as spikes for piercing and joining into blood bags.

Claims (32)
1. A blood filter element cascade which can be used in blood transfusions without blockage, and which is capable of removing large particles, such as blood clots, and also small particles down to approximately 20μ in size, while passing platelets, red blood cells and at least a substantial proportion of white blood cells, comprising in combination, two filter sheets, arranged in downstream flow sequence in order of progressively increasing fineness; (a) the first filter sheet comprising coarse open netting of plastic filamentary material having a pore size within the range from about 800 to about 4, 000 microns, small enough to remove blood clots, and coarse enough to do so without being subject to blocking by the blood clots that are strained out, and (b) the second filter sheet comprising an open mesh fabric of plastic monofilaments, having a pore size within the range from about 20 to about 50 microns, capable of removing microemboli, lipids and debris, and gas emboli, that pass through the first filter element while passing platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells .
2. A blood filter element cascade according to claim 1, in which the first filter sheet is an open-mesh netting prepared by extruding, casting, or molding plastic and having an integral filamentary structure.
3. A blood filter element cascade according to claim 2, in which the plastic material is selected from polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide, and polycarbonate.
4. A blood filter element cascade according to claim 1, in which the second filter sheet is a woven square-weave mesh of plastic monofilaments having a pore size within the range from about 20 to about 50 microns, the filaments being locked in place at their crossing points.
5. A blood filter element cascade in accordance with claim 4, in which the monofilaments have a diameter within the range from about 25 to about 50 microns .
6. A blood filter element cascade in accordance with claim 4, in which the plastic monofilaments are of polyester plastic.
7. A blood filter element cascade in accordance with claim 1, in which the filaments are heat set to lock them in place.
8. A blood filter element cascade according to claim 1, in which the two filter sheets are in close juxtaposition, and corrugated or convoluted to provide a high surface area to flow.
