Abstract
1366282 Shaft furnace charging apparatus THYSSEN NIEDERRHEIN AG HUTTENUND WALZWERKE 15 Jan 1973 [20 Jan 1972] 2006/73 Heading F4B Charging apparatus for a shaft furnace comprises a conveyer 2 for the charge material, an upper closing flap 3 and a lower closing bell 4 working with alternate timing, a housing 5 enclosing a reciprocable basket 6 with a bellbottom 7 separate from the basket, the basket being adapted to be lowered so that the bellbottom rests on the bell 4. The conveyer is moved into and out of the upper opening 8 to allow the flap 3 to close. During a delivery the charge material, which may be of fragile green pellets, falls only a short distance into shaft 18 and forms a conical heap, the basket being in the raised position so that the bell-bottom closes the bottom of the shaft. When the shaft is filled the basket is lowered allowing the charge to run into the basket. The basket is lowered, as the conveyer delivers further charge, until it rests on stops 12. When the lower bell 4 is lowered the bell-bottom moves with it allowing the charge to run out of the basket into the furnace. The lifting device 11 then raises the bell-bottom 7 and the basket and the cycle is repeated.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1· Charging apparatus for a shaft furnace* particularly for a direct reduction shaft furnace* comprising a conveyor for the charge material and a closure for the furnace top with an upper closing element and a lover closing bell with a surrounding housing and a basket the level of which is adapted to be adjusted and having a removable cone shaped bell bottom the said bell bottom being adapted to be lowered down onto the lover closing bell and together with it» the said upper closing element end the lower closing bell working with alternate timing*•characterised thereby that the bell bottom in its uppermost position serves as closing means or a central shat in the housing and is adapted to be lowered onto the lower closing bell in accordance with the quantities of charge material* determining the degree of free drop of the material* the upper closing element being, made as a flap in front of a side delivery opening in the housing of the charging apparatus* and the conveyor* in use* being adapted to be moved into and out of this delivery opening* 2* Charging apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the basket has an in-drawn rim by which it may be set on the bell-bottom*
