Abstract

1339921 Railway vehicle undercarriages BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 12 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 11399/71 Heading B7L A suspension arrangement for supporting an end of a railway vehicle comprises a bolster 4 suspended from a bogie frame 3 by swing links 5, a structure 7 which is arranged to transmit the weight of the vehicle body 8 to the bolster 4, the structure 7 being hinged to the bolster 4 on a horizontal axis 6 which extends transversely of the bogie and is displaced longitudinally of the bogie from the connections of the swing links 5 to the bolster 4, and a suspension 9 comprising vertical spring assemblies disposed between the bolster 4 and structure 7. The structure 7 may be integral with the vehicle body 8; or be connected thereto by trunnion mountings 14, Fig. 5, for pivoting about axis 15 contained in the longitudinal vertical centre plane of the vehicle, under the action of hydraulic tilting jacks 16 and springs 17; or be connected thereto by a centre pivot 18, Fig. 6, and side bearers 19 between the body 8 and outrigger arms 20 rigid with the structure 7. Alternatively the structure 7 may comprise a rigid beam (24), Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), interconnecting the adjacent ends of two adjacent articulated vehicle bodies (8a and 8b). In another form, Fig. 10, a pair of adjacent vehicle bodies 8a and 8b are each mounted on a respective structure 7, each of the latter being connected via a respective bolster 4 to a common bogie frame 3. [GB1339921A]

Claims (9)

39287/2 WHAT WE CLAIM:
1. A suspension arrangement for supporting an end of a railway vehicle, the suspension arrangement comprising a bogie having a bogie frame supported on at least two wheelsets , a bolster suspended from the bogie frame through a pair of swing l inks disposed in a transverse plane of the bogie, a structure which is arranged to transmit the weight of the vehicle body to the bolster, the structure being hinged to the bolster on a horizontal axis extending transversely of the bogie and displaced longitudinal ly of the bogie from the transverse plane containing the swing l inks whereby transverse tilting movements of said structure cause torsional stressing of said bolster and a vertical suspension disposed between the bolster and said structure.
2. A railway vehicle having a suspension arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said structure forms an integral part of the veh cle body.
3. A railway vehicle having a suspension arrangement as cl aimed in claim 1 , wherein said structure supports a vehicle body through tilting jacks and the vehicle body is pivotal ly ( connected to said structure for tilting movement about a longitudinal axis of the vehicle body.
4. A suspension arrangement as claimed in claim 1 or a railway vehicle as claimed in claim 3 wherein said structure comprises a rigid beam for inter-connecting two adjacent vehicle bodies .
5. A pair of adjacent railway vehicle bodies supported at their adjacent ends by a suspension arrangement as1 claimed in claim 4, wherein the adjacent ends of vehicle bodies ase articulated together and the ends of said rigid beam are respectively connected to the two adjacent vehicle bodies at a distance longitudinally of the adjacent vehicle bodies from their articulation and in a manner permitting relative angular movement between the adjacent vehicle bodies.
6. A suspension arrangement as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein two said bolsters are suspended from a common bogie frame, and a said structure and vertical suspension is individually associated with each bolster .
7. A pair of adjacent railway vehicle bodies supported at their adjacent ends by a suspension arrangement as claimed in claim 6 , wherein each vehicle body is mounted on a respective one of said structure.
8. A suspension arrangement for a railway vehicle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 3, or Figures 4 and 5 or Figures 6 and 7 or Figures 8 and 9, or Figure 10 of the accompanying drawings.
9. A pair of railway vehicle bodies supported by a suspension arrangement substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 8 and 9 or Figure 10 of the accompanying Attorney for Applicants M
