Description
Improvements in or relating to port seals A 21969 The present invention relates to port seals particularly intended for closing used in nuclear It is a particular object of the invention to ensure an optimum seal in the closed position of the port by uniform compression of a joint arranged without increasing the number of operations necessary to close the According to the present invention there is provided a port seal comprising two parallel secured to and spaced from each other by a frame running along their a plurality of bolts mounted in said frame at equal intervals one and movable each in a direction perpendicular to said frame and parallel to said said bolts being actuated from a single control located between said and being into engagement with notches provided in a fixed said notches comprising an inclined plane causing during said engagement the digplacement of the port seal perpendicular to its plane in order to tighten up a sealing gasket located between said frame and said The bolts or rods are preferably engageable in the notches under the action of springs which are freed by manoeuvring the said control In order that the invention may be more clearly reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one embodiment thereof by way of and in 1 shows a schematic view of a control and transmission or drive 2 shows a through the port alone the 22 showing a spring and its guide Referring now to the a port seal according to the invention is show which essentially comprises two plates 1 and 2 fixed to a frame 3 which separates A transmission or drive is arranged between the The inner plate in contact xirith the atmosphere of a chamber to be a has a smooth which is easily The outer plate 2 is The whole of the port which is movable about double hinges or other joints may be located in a profiled 4 forming a fillister or frame for the Along the whole of its in the zone which rests on the profiled the port seal has a trapezoidal housing in which a gasket is located Figures 2 and The plate 2 has access apertures at its centre for reaching a control spindle 7 of square section which is used to turn a pinion 9 by of a pair of gears 8 and to move a chain 10 passing round pinion 9 and also for reaching a pawl and ratchet arrangement 11 which prevents rotation of pinion 9 in the direction opposite the winding of the chain As Figure 1 particularly two chains 12 and 13 are fixed to the free end of the chain These chains pass around return pulleys having spindles fixed to the plate and each serving one half of the total number of springs symmetrically with respect to the centre of the According to the the springs regularly spaced on the four sides of the port are each located between a stop 16 integral with the inner plate 1 and a bolt or rod 17 which slides in an opening provided for this purpose in the frame On the bolt or rod 17 is fixed a pulley which passes one of the chains 12 and the return pulleys 14 being arranged so that the two edges of the chain are parallel to the spring The bolt or rod 17 carries on the other hand at caster 19 when the port is in the closed is located opposite a notch 20 provided in the profiled member 4 2 and e caster 19 is supported in this notch on a flat surface or plane 21 inclined respect to the plane of the In order to close the the springs 15 are firstly compressed by pulling on the chains and at the same time as the or rods 17 and the casters 19 are withdrawn inside the Said latter is put in position on the profiled member the pinion 9 being held back by the pawl and ratchet Then the pinion 9 is freed by releasing the arrangement The energy stored up in the springs 15 then moves the casters 19 step by step out of the The casters 19 are engaged on the inclined members 21 and their travel therealong causes the lateral displacement of the which is supported on the profiled member tightening up the joint On the other by merely withdrawing the bolts or rods the seal may be broken to allow complete opening of the As is evident from the above the port according to the invention needs neither a fluid circuit nor which considerably reduces possible is it may be effected by leaving the port in close position and without breaking the since said latter is maintained by the single action of the springs In the device the springs 15 are controlled by means of two different chains 12 and which have the advantage of ensuring a progressive tightening of the joint from two opposite points of the it will be apparent that a or on the a larger number of chains may alternatively be the casters 19 could be for by a finger having a trapezoidal of which would slide on the inclined plane The movements of the square control spindle 7 and of the pawl and ratchet 11 may obviously be controlled by mechanical or hydraulic insufficientOCRQuality
Claims (2)
1. CLAIMS 1· A port seal comprising two parallel plates, secured to and spaced from each other by a frame running along their perimeter, a plurality of bolts mounted in said frame at equal intervals (from one another) and movable each in a direction perpendicular to said frame and parallel to said plates, said bolts being actuated from a single control member , located between said plates, and being spring-urged into engagement with notches provided in a fixed port-case, said notches comprising an inclined plane causing during said engagement the displacement of the port seal perpendicular to its plane in order to tighten up a sealing gasket located between said frame and said port-ease.
2. A port seal as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the bolts or rods have casters rolling on the inclined plane during the passage of the bolts or rods into the notches. 5. A port seal, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings. For the Applicants RTNERS
