Abstract

A window glazing assembly comprises a plurality of support blocks 10 fixed to a window frame 11 at spaced apart locations along the edge of one face 12 of a window pane 13. An elongate glazing strip 15 is mounted on and extends along the tops of the support blocks and has front and rear longitudinal edges 16 and 17. The rear edge 17 of the glazing strip carries a gasket 18 under pressure sealing between the rear edge 17 of the glazing strip and the window pane. The glazing strip and the blocks have interlocking hooks 21, 25 and 22, 26 which are biassed against unlocking by the pressure exerted on the glazing strip by the gasket.

Description

This invention relates to an assembly for glazing a window pane.
According to the present invention there is provided a window glazing assembly comprising a plurality of support blocks fixed to a window frame at spaced apart locations along the edge of one face of a window pane, an elongate glazing strip mounted on and extending along the tops of the support blocks and having front and rear longitudinal edges, and means on the rear edge of the glazing strip carrying a gasket under pressure sealing between the rear edge of the glazing strip and the window pane, wherein the glazing strip and the blocks have interlocking formations which are biassed against unlocking by the pressure exerted on the glazing strip by the gasket.
In this specification the front-to-rear direction is the direction towards the surface of the window pane on the side of the pane where the assembly is located.
The advantage of the invention is that the glazing 20 strip cannot be readily removed without first removing the window pane to relieve the bias pressure exerted by IE 90762 - 3 the gasket on the interlocking formations, thereby providing security not available in other glazing devices.
In an embodiment of the invention the glazing strip 5 has at least one leg having a forwardly facing hook and each block has at least one rearwardly facing surface with a rearwardly facing hook, the said at least one leg of the glazing strip being pressed against the said at least one rearwardly facing surface of the blocks with the hook on the leg engaging behind the hooks on the blocks .
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is an enlarged cross-section of a glazing assembly according to a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a glazing assembly according to a second embodiment of the invention; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the assembly without the glazing strip; Figure 4 is a cross-section of the glazing assembly of Figure 2 as the glazing strip is being pushed into place; and Figure 5 is a cross-section of the glazing assembly of Figure 2 with the glazing strip secured in place.
IE 90762 Referring to Figure 1, a window glazing assembly comprises a plurality of support blocks 10, of which only a single one is shown in the cross-sectional figure, which are fixed to a window frame 11 at spaced-apart locations along the edge of one face 12 of a window pane 13. The blocks 10 are fixed to the wooden frame 11 by screws (not shown) which pass through holes 14 in the blocks. The blocks may be of polypropylene.
An elongate glazing strip 15, for example of 10 aluminium, is mounted on and extends along the tops of the support blocks 10 in common, and has front and rear longitudinal edges 16 and 17 respectively. The front edge 16 curves round almost to meet the frame 11, to hide the blocks 10.
The rear edge 17 of the glazing strip 15 carries a gasket 18 under pressure sealing between the rear edge 17 of the glazing strip 15 and the surface 12 of the window pane.
It is a feature of the present invention that the glazing strip and the blocks have interlocking formations which are biassed against unlocking by the pressure exerted on the glazing strip by the gasket.
This is achieved, in this embodiment, by providing the glazing strip 15 with two legs 19, 20 each having a forwardly facing hook 21, 22 respectively, and by providing each block 10 with two rearwardly facing surfaces 23, 24 each having a rearwardly facing hook 25, 26 respectively.
IE 90762 - 5 During assembly, after the blocks 10 are fixed as described, the glazing strip 15 carrying the gasket 18 on its rear edge 17 is pressed downwardly into the position shown. Each leg 19, 20 of the glazing strip 15 slides down the corresponding surface 23, 24 of each block, until the glazing strip 15 finally snaps into place as the hooks in each pair of hooks 21, 25 and 22, 26 engage behind one another.
The pressure of the gasket 18 then maintains each 10 leg of the glazing strip pressed against a respective rearwardly facing surface of the blocks with the hooks on the legs engaging behind the hooks on the blocks.
A second embodiment of the invention is shown in Figures 2 to 5, wherein the same reference numerals have been used as in Figure 1 for the same or similar parts.
The principal difference between the assembly shown in Figures 2 to 5 and that shown in Figure 1 is that instead of having two legs 19, 20 and two hooks 21, 22, the glazing strip 15 has only a single leg with a forwardly facing hook, depending from the rear longitudinal edge 17 of the glazing strip, equivalent to the leg 19 and hook 21 of Figure 1. Also, each block 10 has only a single rearwardly facing surface with a rearwardly facing hook, equivalent to the surface 23 and hook 25 of Figure 1.
Further, to give the assembly stability, the front longitudinal edge 16 of the glazing strip 15 extends downwardly in front of the blocks 10 fully to meet the surface of the window frame 11. During assembly, the IE 90762 glazing strip 15 is rotated about the axis defined by the line of contact between the front edge 16 and the frame 11, as shown in Figure 4, during which rotation the hook 21 on the leg 19 slides down the surface 23 of the block until the hook 21 snaps into place under the hook 25 on the surface 23. At this point the assembly is locked in position by the pressure of the gasket 18 and cannot be removed without removing the glass 13.
