Description

This invention relates to an apparatus for forming the beads and water-retaining folds on deepdrawn blanks for-one-part gutter angles having side walls which are preferably shaped like arcs of a circle adjacent 5 to the corner joint between the abutting gutter angle members.
In the manufacture of gutter angles consisting of two semicircular gutter members which abut at an acute angle it is usual to solder or weld the joint which consists of a miter joint. In order to avoid said soldering or welding 1° operation, which involves disadvantages regarding the assembling work and the long-term tightness, it has been proposed in German Utility Model 78 11 514 to provide a gutter angle for connecting semicircular gutters. That gutter angle is made from sheet metal by deep-drawing and has side walls which constitute an arc of a circle at each corner. Such gutter angle has protruding free edge portions at the longitudinal edges and said edge portions are properly trimmed and then curled to form beads and flanged to form waterretaining folds. These bending operations are generally carried out by means of conventional roofer's tools and roofer's implements.
It has also been attempted to use suitable machines for curling said beads and for flanging said water-retaining folds although such practices involve the disadvantage that a plurality of operations are required to make the beads or water-retaining folds. This involves a relatively large amount of manual work and of time and is not suitable for modern production work.
It is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus for forming the beads and water-retaining folds on deep-drawn blanks for one-piece gutter angles quickly, in a simple manner and with a minimum expenditure and particularly to permit such work to be carried out also by semi-skilled labors.
Accordingly, the invention provides apparatus for forming the beads and water-retaining folds by automatically curling and bending the protruding, trimmed, free longitudinal edge portions on deepdrawn blanks for one-part gutter angles having side walls which are shaped like arcs of a circle adjacent to the corner joint between the abutting gutter angle members. The apparatus of the invention comprises a lower die and an upper die. The lower die consists of a stationary lower die member, which conforms to the exterior profile of the blank, and a raising die member, which is adapted to be raised and lowered and disposed on the side on which the water-retaining fold is to be formed. The upper die comprises an upper die member, which is adapted to be raised and lowered and conforms to the interior profile of the blank and is adapted to be forced against the lower die member, and a backing bar, which is adapted to be raised and lowered and disposed in a recess of the upper die member on the side on which the water-retaining fold is to be formed.
On the side on which the beads are to be curled, a rotatable curling rod is disposed, which has a longitudinal slot and is adapted to be slidably fitted onto the edges of the free longitudinal edge portions and to be displaced in the longitudinal and transverse directions. On the side on which the water-retaining folds are to be formed, a rotatable bending rod is provided, which has a longitudinal slot and is adapted to be slidably fitted onto the edges of the free longitudinal edge portions and is longitudinally displaceable.
For forming the water-retaining folds on blanks for interior gutter angles the raising die member and the backing bar consist each of two members, which are adapted to be raised and lowered and are separated adjacent to the corners.
For forming the beads on blanks for interior gutter angles, a backing jaw, which is adapted to be raised and lowered and serves to clamp the free longitudinal edge portions, is disposed adjacent to each of the corners of the lower and upper die member and has a U-shaped recess, which extends parallel to the axis of the blank so that in clamping position there is a passage between the two backing jaws and the curling > rods are adapted to be inserted into said passage and to be slidably fitted therein onto the longitudinal edge portions.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention, the lower and upper die members are replaceable for adaptation to different profiles of the blanks for gutter angle members. 4 ‘I ί β In accordance with a special feature of the apparatus according to the invention the curling rods are mounted on transverse carriages, the curling rods and bending rods together with the associated drive means are mounted on longitudinal carriages, and the transverse carriages are movable along a track which is inclined toward the lower die member.
The advantages afforded by the invention reside particularly in that the beads and water-retaining folds to be formed on deep-drawn blanks for gutter angles can be made quickly and in a simple manner and with a relatively small expenditure. It is merely necessary to insert the blanks by hand into the lower die member; thereafter all forming operations are automatically performed.
Two embodiments for an exterior gutter angle and an interior gutter angle, respectively, will -.mow be described and explained more in detail with reference to the drawings.
First Embodiment Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the apparatus for making exterior gutter angles, Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on section line I-I in Figure 1.
, Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the apparatus when the top part has been removed and Figure 4 is an isometric view showing the upper and lower dies.
A blank 1 of an exterior gutter angle has been formed by deep-drawing and has been trimmed at its longitudinal edges is intended to be formed with the beads and waterretaining folds.
The free longitudinal edge portions 2, 2', 3, 3' of the blank 1 protrude approximately horizontally with respect to the vertical center plane. The blank 1 is inserted into the die member 5 of the composite lower die. That lower die member 5 is stationary and mounted on the baseplate 4 and is replaceable and its profile conforms to the exterior profile of the blank 1. By means of a suitable control system the die member 8 , which constitutes part of the upper die and is adapted to be raised and lowered by means of the cylinder 7 and conforms to the interior profile of the blank 1, is forced against the lower die member 5. Thereafter the backing bar 10, which constitutes the other part of the upper die and is adapted to be raised and lowered by means of the cylinder 9, is lowered into the recess 11, which is formed in the die member 5 on the side on which the water-retaining fold is to be formed. Thereafter, the raising mold member 13, which is disposed beside the lower mold member 5 and adapted to be raised and lowered by the cylinder 12, is raised so that the longitudinal edge portions provided for the formation of the water-retaining fold are moved to a position in which they are approximately parallel to the vertical center plane of the blank 1 .
When the backing bar 10 and the raising mold member 13 have been moved back to their initial position, the longitudinal carriages 16, 16', which are mounted on the tracks 14, 14', 15, 15' are moved inwardly by means of the cylinders 17, 17' so that the curling rods 20, 20' and bending rods 21, 21', which are adapted to be rotated by drive means 18, 18', 19, 19*, are moved so that their longitudinal slots are slidably fitted on the edges of the free longitudinal edge portions 2, 2‘, 3, 3' of the blank 1. 4 4 18 Ί* Then one and thereafter the other of the free longitudinal edge portions 2, 2' are shaped to form respective beads.
As the beads 23, 23' are curled, the transverse slides 22, 22' which carry the curling rods 20, 20' are moved on an inclined plane toward the gutter angle. Thereafter the raised free longitudinal edge portions 3, 3' are bent to form water-retaining folds 24, 24', The curling rods 20, *, the bending rods 21, 21' and the die member 8 then move to their initial positions. The die member 8 and the cylinders 7,9 for actuating the die member 10 and the backing bar 12 are secured to the mounting plate 26, which is attached to the crossbeam 25.
Second Embodiment Figure 5 is a top plan view showing the apparatus 15 for making interior gutter angles.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line II-II in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a top plan view showing the apparatus when the upper portion has been removed and 2o Figure 8 and 9 are isometric views showing the upper and lower die seen from the front and rear, respectively.
A deep-drawn blank 27 has been trimmed on its i longitudinal edges and serves to make an interior gutter angle.
The free longitudinal edge portions 28, 28', 29, 29' protrude 25 approximately horizontally with respect to the vertical center plane. The blank 27 is inserted into the stationary lower die member 31 of the composite lower die. The lower die member 31 is mounted on the baseplate 30 and has aptofile corresponding to the exterior profile of the blank 27 and is forced against the lower mold member 31 by means of the die member 33, which constitutes part of the upper die and is adapted to be raised 544·’ and lowered by the cylinder 32 and conforms to the interior profile of the blank 27. By means of the cylinder 34, 34', the two backing bar members 35, 35', which constitute the other part of the upper die and are disposed on the side on which the water-retaining fold is to be formed and are adapted to be raised and lowered, are lowered into the recess 36 of the die member 33. The two raising die members 38, 38', which are disposed beside the lower die member 31 on the side of the water-retaining fold and which constitute part of the lower die and are adapted to be raised and lowered, are subsequently raised in succession by means of the cylinders 37, 37'so that the free longitudinal edge portions 28, 28' of the blank 27, which are approximately parallel to the vertical center plane, are shaped so that they-overlap in the corner region. At the same time, the free longitudinal edge portions 29, 29' intended to form the beads are clamped between the backing jaws 41, 42, which are adapted to be raised and lowered and each of which is provided with a U-shap-d recess 39, 40, which is parallel to the axis of the blank 27. When the backing bar members 35, 35? and the raising die members 38, 38' have been returned to their initial pesitions, the longitudinal carriages 45, 45' mounted on the guides 43, i 43', 44, 44' are moved inwardly by means of the cylinders 46, 46' so that the longitudinal slots of the bending rods 47, 47' and of the curling rods 48, 48' are slidably fitted onto the edge of the free longitudinal edge portions 28, 28', 29, 29' of the blank.
Each of the curling rods 48, 48' moves into the passage defined by the two recesses 39, 40. As soon as the backing jaws 41, 42 have returned to their initial,, position, the curling bars 48, 48' are rotated by the drive means 49, 49' and the bending rod 47 is rotated by the drive means 49, 49' so that the beads 51, 51' and one of the /water-retaining fold 52 are formed. In that operation the curling rods 48, 48', which are mounted on respective transverse carriages 53, 53',are moved on an inclined plane toward the gutter angle. The second fold 52' is then bent by the bending rod 47' so as to form an overlap in the corner region. The die members 33, 35, 35', 41' which consittute the upper die and the cylinders 32, -34, 34' for actuating said die members are secured to the mounting plate 55, which is mounted on the crossbeam 54.
