Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. Kin-inra, a'
citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Forming Faves Troughs, of which the following is a speciiication.
rChis invention relates to dies for forming eaves-trough and has for its objects to provide dies by means of which an eaves-trough is completely formed from a sheet or strip of metal in a single pressing operation of the dies.
The above and other objects may be at tained by providing dies such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation ot' portions of the dies showing the same in the initial position;
Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2, Fig. l;
Fig. 3, a similar section showing the initial movement of the dies;
Fig. d, a section on the line 4-d, Fig. l, showing the final movement of the dies; and
Fig. 5, an end elevation of the finished oaves-trough.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The device comprising the present invention contemplates a plurality of dies ar' ranged to press the eaves-trough by a single operation of the dies and includes the lower fixed die l arranged to be mounted in fixed position upon the bed of any suitable form of press.
The lower die l hasl a longitudinal halfround channel 2 formed in its upper face of substantially the same contour as the body portion of the eaves-trough. A plurality of spring pressed plungers 3 normally protrude upward through 'the bottom of the channel 2 for the purpose of kicking the finished eaves-trough out of the lower die after each complete operation of the dies.
The upper movable dies comprise the central forming die l carried upon the reciprocating head 5, the bending die 6 carried upon the reciprocating head 7 and the bead forming die 8 carried upon the reciprocating head 9.
The heads 5, 7 and Qmay be vertically re- -`eiprocated by any usual and Vwell known means, the head 5 being operated independently of the heads 7 and 9 which may 5 operate in unison.
The forming die l is provided. with the half-round portion l() arranged to fit within the channel2 leaving a sheet like space between the dies. A quarter round cutout ll is provided in the side of the die I adjacent to the bending die 6 and conforming' to the rounded inner surface l2 of the bending die.
The bending die y6 is provided witrthe T-shaped guide ribs 13 slidably mounted for iorizontal movement in the guide blocks i4; which are suspended by lmeans of the sliding pins l5 mounted for vertical movement through the head 7.
One or more angular cams i6 are fixed tto the upper surface of the bending die 6 and arranged to eo-act with similar earns i7 fixed to the under surface' of the head 7. It will thus beseen that as the head 7 `is depressed and the lower surface of the bending die 6 is brought into engagement with the upper surface of the lower die l, a continued downward movement of the head 7 will cause the bending die to be moved inwardly to theposition shown in Fig. 4.
The bead forming ,die 8 is fixed to the lower portion ofthe head 9 as by bolts 1S and is provided on its under side, adjacent to the die 4L, with the bead forming channel placed upon the lower die l inthe position shown in Fig. 2. `The head 5 is then depressed, forcing the central portion of the sheet A into the channel 2 as shown inl Fig. 3, the heads 7 and 9 remaining in the raised position.v Y
The heads 7 and 9 may then be lowered ui unison, or each of said heads may be lowered independently after the head 5 has been lowered. As the bead forming die is lowered,`
the upwardly extending edge portion of the sheet, indicated at B in Fig. 3, will be received into the bead forming channel 19 of the die 8, rolling said edge portion of the sheet into a bead, as shown at C in Fig. 4.
As the head 7 is lowered', the under side of the bending die 6 will first engage the upper surface of the lower die l, after whichl a. continued downward movement of the head 7 will, through the cams 16 and 17, slide the bending die 6 inwardly, the rounded bending surfacelQ thereof engaging the upturned Yedge portion D of the sheet and bending the same around thesurface 11 of the die e, as indicated at E in Fig. 4.
In raising' the dies to the initial position, the head 7 may iirst be raised, the inner edge of the bending die 6 riding against the cam surface 2O oi the die l-,`sliding the bending die outward to its normal position with reterence to the guide blocks 14. rlhe head 9 may, it desired, be raised at the same time, although this is immaterial. `When the head 5 raised, the spring pressed plungers 3,' will automatically kick the iinished eavestrough, as shown in F ig. 5, outy of the channel 2 ol the lower die. o Y
The finished eaves-trough will comprise the body portion A of substantially halfround cross sectional contour, provided with the bead C upon one edge. The portion E of the eaves-trough is bent inwardly by the bending die in order to allow for a certain spring in the metal, this side of the finished eaves-trough springing out as indicated at E in Fig. 5, producing a substantially haliround trough. 4
if desired. a suitable spring may be pro* vided to assist in moving the bending die outward to its normal position with relation to the guide blocks lll, although as above described, this movement may be accomplished through the cam 20.
it will be evident from the above description and the illustration of the device in the accompanying drawings, that a simple and eiiicient means is provided for pressing an eaves-trough `from a. blank sheet in a single operation ot the device, overcoming the difculties heretofore encountered in the manufacture of eaves-trough, simplifying the manufacture of eaves-trough and lessening the cost of the same. y
It should be understood that the device may be operated equally well to forni eavestrough having a bead upon each edge, a second bead forming die being substituted Jfor the bending die, the operation of the device being otherwise the same as above described.
