Abstract

The process and the apparatus serve for removing impurities, particularly heavy metal ions, from aqueous liquids in which these impurities are contained. The impurity-containing liquid is brought into contact with a particle-forming treatment material, which effects the removal of the impurities from the liquid stream by reaction by ion exchange or by adsorption. The liquid is passed through an inert packed layer of a particulate finely divided filter material which is retained in perforations in the vessel wall directly adjacent to the treatment material. The filter material has a particle size such that the penetration of any particulate solids contained in the liquid is prevented. Furthermore, the inner surface of the vessel wall, to avoid a blockage of the particulate material, is scraped off over the perforations in which the filter material is retained. [GB1563537A]
