Abstract

o- and p-toluene are prepared continuously by ring chlorination of toluene in the presence of at least one catalyst in parallel flow with intensive mixing. Chlorine and toluene are employed in a molar ratio 0.4 to 1.0 and reacted in a reaction zone at 5 DEG to 70 DEG C. After the reaction, hydrogen chloride and unreacted toluene are distilled off. The bottom product is immediately separated into the o- and p-chlorotoluene isomers. The resulting toluenes can be used as solvents or as starting materials and intermediates. [GB1497015A]
