Abstract

Pharmacologically active compounds of the formula Ia <IMAGE> or an acid addition salt thereof, wherein X denotes an R<6>SO2- group, R<1> and R<2> denote lower alkyl or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bonded form a heterocyclic ring, R<3> and R<4> denote hydrogen, hydroxyl or methoxy, R<5> denotes hydrogen, halogen, nitro or lower alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, R<6> denotes lower alkyl and n denotes 2 or 3, are prepared by dehydration in that a solution of the corresponding triphenylethanols is heated in the presence of an acid. One application of this process is the preparation of compounds of the formula Ia, in which X is hydrogen, by catalytic elimination of the R<6>SO2- group by means of lithium aluminium chloride. The products have various valuable pharmacological properties and are in particular oestrogenically active, possess a post-coital anti-fertile action and furthermore exhibit anti-tumour activity.
