Abstract
1469183 Belling the end of a pipe POLVA-NEDERLAND BV 2 April 1974 [5 April 1973] 14553/74 Heading B5A The heated end of a thermoplastics pipe 1 is belled by engagement over a shaping mandrel 5 which comprises a base part 7 co-operating via ribs and grooves 39 with ribs and grooves 41 of a slidable sleeve 15. When assembled for belling as in Fig. 1, the base part and sleeve support a radially expanded resilient rubber ring 13, and are clamped together by the piston-rod 28 of a cylinder 25. The ring 13 embeds a snaked spring steel wire adjacent its inner edge 17. In operation, the heated pipe 1 is clamped by a split clamp 4, which moves the pipe over the assembled mandrel 5, shaping being aided by a split external die 24 and an annulus 23. When the pipe has cooled, the piston-rod 28 is moved to the right to release the clamping of the base part 7 and sleeve 15. The annulus 23, cylinder 25 and base part 7 move to the left so that the ring 13 contracts and is pushed by the bell end down an inclined plane 37 of the base part (see Fig. 2). Finally, the piston-rod 28 is moved back to the left to remove the sleeve 15 and ring 13 from the pipe end, push the ring 13 back up the inclined plane 37, and so reassemble the mandrel for further use.
