1469939 Trench excavators INTERMAN BEHEERBEGELEIDING BV 6 Dec 1974 [13 Dec 1973] 52794/74 Heading E1F A trench excavator having a digging element-armed endless cutter chain 39 circulating about a vertically swingable boom 29 rotatably supported on a driven shaft 41 extending from one side of the chassis 2 of the excavator and carrying a drive sprocket 37 for the chain is characterised by a two part, outwardly opening guard hood 49 for the upper end of the chain boom assembly. The hood has two parts 50, 51 of which one is mounted on the frame and the other is mounted on the boom so as to slide one in the other so that with the boom raised to a substantially horizontal position they are superimposed and with the boom swung downwards they slide apart so that at all positions of the boom the drive sprocket and the upper part of the boom are covered from above and from the sides thereof adjacent the chassis of the excavator. Preferably the hood has the form of a spherical segment, being formed by two spherical segment shaped parts 50, 51, which each extend through an angle of at least 90‹ about the driven shaft. The front part of the hood in the direction of travel of the excavator is preferably secured to the chassis 2. The guard hood can also extend laterally over a screw conveyer 53 mounted on. the drive shaft externally of the drive sprocket. The chassis, which can be advanced by causing a winch 15 on the chassis to haul in on an anchored cable 16, is mounted on two front and two rear wheels of which one of the rear wheels is displaced inwards relative to the corresponding front wheel so that the boom and hood can be located at one side of the chassis in a recess in the chassis.
