1429441 Process for the preparation of 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diaminostilbene - 2,2<SP>1</SP>- disulphonic acid BAYER AG 19 April 1974 [21 April 1973 5 May 1973] 17240/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the preparation of 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminostilbene-2,2<SP>1</SP>-disulphonic acid or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof by reduction of 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dinitrostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof with hydrogen in solution or suspension (e.g. in water and/ or methanol) at a pH of 2 or greater at a temperature of 15-120‹ C. and a pressure of 1-250 bars in the presence of at least 0À1% by weight of a Group VIII metal as catalyst and, if the product is desired in free acid form, acidification of the reduced product.
