Abstract

PURPOSE: A cationic starch, having a strong hydrogen-bond group and useful as a paper reinforcing agent and a fluocculant, which is obtained by grafting a product generated by the Hofmann reaction from a polyacrylamide, with a starch solution, before the completion of the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Hofmann reaction is caused, by the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide and an alkali metal salt of hypohalogenous acid, cooled to -5W20°C, to an aqueous solution of a copolymer, containing at least 50mol of polyacrylamide or acrylamide, the 10wt% aqueous solution of which has a viscosity of 30000W 10000cp at 25°C, by Brookfield viscometer. When the temperature of the reaction system rises 1/2W9/10 of the ultimate temperature rise, the reaction is continued, with addition of an aqueous solution of starch (derivative) of 5W50wt% concentration. Thereby the acrylamide (co)polymer is grafted and a portion of carbamoyl groups is modified to amino groups. When the viscosity of the system reaches 300W 30000cp, the reaction is ceased by the addition of a reducing agent, to obtain a cationic starch.
