1419603 Production of 3-halogen and 3,5- dihalogen phenols BAYER AG 28 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972 6 Sept 1973 (2)] 55093/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] A process for the production of 3-halogen and 3,5-dihalogenphenols comprises reacting a halogen compound corresponding to the general formula in which X represents halogen; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> independently of one another represent hydrogen, halogen, an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylmercapto or dialkylaminomethyl radical, wherein at least one of the radicals R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> or R<SP>4</SP> represents a halogen atom, whilst the radical R<SP>3</SP> can also represent a hydroxy group and, in the case of 3,5-dihalogen phenols, must represent a halogen atom; R represents OH; or R together with R<SP>2</SP> can represent the radical -O-CH 2 -OCH 2 -, attached by the terminal oxygen atom to the 3-position, in which case X, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> independently of one another represent hydrogen, halogen or an alkyl radical and at least one of the radicals X or R<SP>3</SP> and at least one of the radicals R<SP>2</SP> or R<SP>4</SP> represents a halogen atom, with hydrogen at an elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising a sulphide or polysulphide of Fe, Co or Ni or of a mixture of these metal sulphides or polysulphides optionally applied to a support or in the presence of a catalyst containing one or more noble metals of Group VIII of the Periodic System in the form of the metal, or a compound thereof together with sulphur and/or sulphur compounds, optionally applied to a support. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of from 100‹ to 350‹ C. under a hydrogen pressure of from 20 to 250 atmospheres.
