Abstract

1457404 Pneumatic tyre and wheel rim assemblies DUNLOP Ltd 13 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 52658/72 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre and wheel rim assembly includes a pump which is operable by the tyre, when running deflated, to supply inflation air into the tye cavity and a lubricating material for facilitating relative movement between contacting regions of the interior surface of the tyre when the latter is running deflated. As illustrated, the pump comprises two telescoping cylinders 11, 12 which receive atmospheric air via a non-return valve (not shown) in orifice 9 when cylinder 12 moves radially outwardly under centrifugal force and spring 13 (if present). When the cylinder 12 is forced radially inwardly by the tread of the deflated tyre the air contained by the cylinders is forced via a one-way valve (not shown) into the tyre cavity. The tyre is non-demountably mounted on the rim which (as shown) can be a flat-based, split rim. Also, as shown, the extension of toe 6 of bead 7 into notch 5 prevents the bead 7 moving axially inwardly of the rim. Alternative arrangements for mounting the tyre non-demountably include a bead spacer ring or removable bead retaining studs. The lubricating material may contain a puncture sealing material. If only one pump is provided a counterbalancing weight will be provided. Alternatively the assembly may include a plurality of pumps. The inlet valve or a pump may be combined with the inflation valve of the assembly so that the assembly is inflated via the pump. [GB1457404A]
