1398177 Smoking mixture IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Nov 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 55833/72 Heading A2C A smoking mixture comprises a modified carbohydrate as smoke-producing fuel, nicotine, and as flavourant isovaleric acid, #- methyl valeric acid, butyric acid or a mixture of at least two of the said acids. The modified carbohydrate is preferably a thermally degraded carbohydrate, especially thermally degraded cellulose. Further modified carbohydrates are oxidised cellulose, cellulose ethers e.g. carboxymethylcellulose or its salts, and the solid condensate obtained by acid or base catalysed condensation of a compound of the formula R<SP>1</SP>COCH 2 CH 2 COR<SP>2</SP> wherein R 1 and R 2 represent hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or formyl. The preferred acids are isovaleric acid and #-methylvaleric acids and mixtures thereof (e.g. in a weight ratio of isovaleric acid to #- methyl valeric acid of 4:1-0.25:1). The proportion of flavourant acids is preferably 0.02- 0.2% by weight. The smoking mixture may contain inorganic fillers, film-forming binders, e.g. methyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, pectins, gums; humectants, e.g. glycerol, glycols; flow controlling catalysts, e.g. potassium citrate; colourants; ash cohesion agents, e.g. citric acid and bentonite; substances producing acidic matter in the smoke, e.g. volatile acids, neutral substances pyrolysing to volatile acids, or weak base acids; carbohydrates, e.g. cellulose, starch, sugar or comminuted tobacco; proteins as flavourants, preferably casein, soyabean protein-or zein. The smoking mixture may be blended with tobacco, particularly flue-cured virginia tobacco to produce blends which may contain 30-70% by weight of the smoking mixture. Specific examples 1 to 11 disclose compositions comprising, besides the acid components, α-cellulose heat-treated in the presence of ammonium sulphamate, glycerol, nicotine, lactic acid, calcium carbonate, casein, soya protein, zein protein, bentonite, ammonium sulphate, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and magnesite, which are slurried and cast to form a film. Example 12 discloses a composition comprising oxidised cellulose, glycerol, nicotine, lactic acid, isovaleric acid, #- methyl valeric acid, calcium carbonate, bentonite, casein, ammonium sulphate, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and magnesite.
