Abstract

1448494 Granulating metals BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 45042/73 Heading C7X [Also in Division B3] A cylindrical member 30, e.g. of Al or Cu, is rotated to give a linear speed of at least 3ft/sec (e.g. greater than 30ft/sec) to the turns of a screw thread formed on its curved surface where it contacts the free surface of a pool of molten material such as Al, Sn or cast iron or non metal material so that there is at least partial solidification of the material in filament form on the extremities and filamentary products of a crosssectional area less than that of a circle of 1.5 mm. diameter, e.g. of 0.1 mm.diameter are spontaneously released. The release occurs in the manner described in Specification 1396788. The products are from 0.5-12 inches in length and may be as long as the helical thread. Higher speeds of rotation produce shorter lengths. The vertically-movable rotated member 30 may have an axial width of at least one inch; its diameter may be from 5-30 inches. It may have threads of opposite hand on different portions and have a direction of rotation such that induced flow of the melt surface is away from the middle of the periphery of the member. There may be indentations on the thread extremity so that the filament length equals the distance between successive indentations. Induced air-flow may be deflected away from the region where the member rotates into contact with the molten material. [GB1448494A]
