Abstract

1390965 Sizing hollow clay articles HEPWORTH IRON CO Ltd 6 June 1973 [15 June 1972] 28091/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] A mandrel having a co-efficient of expansion greater than fired clay is inserted within a hollow, unfired clay article, and the clay then fired. On cooling, the mandrel shrinks away from the clay to allow removal. As described, undersized steel mandrels 20, 22 are inserted one in each end of a moulded or extruded green clay pipe 10. The clay is heated up to 200‹ C. to reduce its moisture content to 1%, either supported on rings 18, 20 on a kiln car within an associated drying chamber, or on a roller drier conveyer. The clay is then fired at 1040‹ C., and becomes plastic and contracts on to the mandrels as the maximum temperature is reached. The clay is freeze-cooled by blown air to reduce the temperature to 700‹ C., when the mandrels can be removed. The mandrels can be inserted into the pipe at any time up to the clay becoming plastic. An iron/chromium/silicon ferritic alloy is described for the mandrel, having magnetic properties to aid insertion and removal. Spigots, sockets, and plain pipe ends can be sized. [GB1390965A]
