Abstract

1343732 Forming hollow bodies; biaxial stretching H HENCH Jnr 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 22534/71 Heading B5A Hollow thermoplastics bodies are formed by a method including biaxial stretching in the thermoelastic range of a moulded preform having a temperature gradient in the longitudinal direction in the region at which it is stretched, the gradient having one sign where the preform wall thickness increases in one longitudinal direction of the preform, and the opposite sign where the preform wall thickness decreases in the same direction. The temperature difference between the ends of the preform may be 6-20‹ C., according to the degree of crystallinity of the thermoplastics. The preform may be formed by injection moulding and the injection mould may be chilled. A single, constant temperature cooling medium may be used or different cooling media at different temperatures may be used to cool different zones of the mould. Alternatively, different zones of the mould may have a different thermal conductivity or the cooling ducts therein may have a different cross-section or be spaced differently from the mould cavity. After establishing the desired temperature gradient, the preform is biaxially stretched by blow-moulding. The preform may alternatively be formed by pressing or casting, a separate chill mould being used.
