Abstract

1426175 Moulding tyres DUNLOP Ltd 4 April 1973 [6 April 1972] 15787/72 Heading B5A The sidewalls and tread portion of a pneumatic tyre are moulded as separate parts in separate mould cavities from rubber in an uncured state and the parts are then brought into abutment while still in their mould cavities and joined together and cured under heat and pressure. Each part has a locking sprue which holds it in its cavity; during moulding, and mould opening, at least the moulds for moulding the sidewalls are pressurized with gas. An injection mould for the production of two sidewalls comprises a platen 31 with passages 34, 35 for the supply in stage (A) of uncured rubber to grooves 33 forming transfer chambers in sidewall mould plates 30; beads 37 are positioned and, at stage (B), grooved platens 39 force rubber from the transfer chambers into cavities 41. The platens contain sprue grooves, not shown, adjacent their moulding faces. The moulded sidewalls are conveyed by their platens to a tread ring portion, stage (G) previously moulded on a ring 46; the moulded parts are forced into contact along annular faces and the temperature of the uncured rubber raised to adhere and cure the parts. Moulding of the tread is effected after applying a breaker assembly to an annular former and clamping it between platens 44, 45, stage (E), together with the ring 46; a screw injector 49 injects uncured rubber into the cavity between the former and ring.
