Abstract

1384885 Sheet forming; seaming non-metallic sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 May 1972 [25 May 1971 17 Feb 1972] 16870/71 and 7428/72 Headings B5A and B5K A method of thermoforming a double-wall unit, e.g. a caravan window, comprises clamping two sheets 5 and 6 over a chamber 1, of which the sheet 5 at least is made of thermoplastics, e.g. methyl methacrylate possibly with a filler, and the sheet 6 has at least one aperture, evacuating the chamber by a vacuum connection 3 to draw the heated sheet into contact with the rim of a vessel 8 (shown chain-dotted), allowing pressure to enter the vessel 8 via a cock 10 to equalize the pressures on each side of the sheet 5 and allow the sheet to deform into parallelism with the sheet 6, and permitting the unit to cool and the two sheets to bond at their peripheries. In Fig. 3 (not shown), two sheets are clamped to a table (13), (14) and air is blown between the table and one of the sheets (12) via a connection (15), and between the sheets (12), (11) via a connection (17). The arrangement of Figs. 4, 5, and 6 (not shown), is similar to that of Fig. 1 but the sheets (30), (31) are disposed in vertical planes. [GB1384885A]
