Abstract

1374759 Sewing; tufting L M BALLAMY 19 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 50460/70 Heading D1G [Also in Division F2] In a sewing or tufting machine a crank 45 on a main shaft 5 drives the needle bar 53 and oscillates the cloth feed mechanism through a series of links, and the needle bar may be stopped and held at the top of its stroke without stopping the crank or the other links. The crank drives a connecting rod 48 carrying a pin 50 which is rotatably held at a selected position along a slot 51 in a transverse link 52. The link is pivoted at one end (71) to the needle bar, and at the other end (54) to a link 55 on second rod 73. At its top end each rod carries a piston 75, 77 in a cylinder 74, 76, and each cylinder is connected through a port 78, 79 to a fluid valve 80. When fluid is pumped into one cylinder (e.g. 74) below the piston, one bar (73) is stopped so that one end (54) of the link 52 is held stationary while the other end drives the free bar (53) up and down. To stop the needle bar 53, fluid is pumped from the one cylinder (74) and into the other (76) so that the second bar 73 reciprocates instead of the needle bar. The pin 50 is adjustable along the slot to adjust the amplitude of the needle bar stroke. The feed mechanism has a free wheel assembly in a casing 41 and a shaft 42 which drives a pair of pulleys 44. The mechanism has a lever 56 with a slot 57 which embraces a pin 70 carried by a control link 69. The connecting rod 48 also has a slot 49 which also embraces the pin 70 so that movement of the connecting rod causes the lever 56 and hence the feed mechanism to oscillate. To raise the feed mechanism off the throat plate 65 a lever 63 is raised thus causing a lever 61 to push down an arm 58 on the feed assembly to pivot the feed assembly about the shaft 42. A spring 59 normally biasses the lever 58 upwards. To alter the length of stitch the pin 70 mounted on the control link 69 is raised or lowered by moving lever 66 which is pivoted on a bracket 90. Pivot 67 is not connected to lever 66 nor bracket 90, but is merely shown at the same height; its function is to allow link 55 to pivot on rod 73. [GB1374759A]
