Abstract

1353803 Driving needles SINGER CO 6 Aug 1971 36978/71 Heading DIG A needle carrier assembly 30 is driven linearly by an oscillating arm 22 via a drive link 50 pivoted at both ends, the geometry being arranged so that at the top and bottom of the stroke the force acelerating the needle carrier assembly acts along a line parallel to the direction of motion and passing through the centre of mass of the needle carrier assembly. The oscillating drive arm 22 is driven from the main drive shaft 15 via a pitman 17 and a crank arm 18 secured to a rock shaft 19. The drive arm 22 is made as long as possible to keep the axis of the link 50 as close as possible to the direction of motion throughout, while at the extreme positions of oscillation the screws 50, 51 intersect the line parallel to the direction of motion, and passing through the centre of mass of the needle carrier assembly. The drive arm 22 has a slot 60 to provide clearance for the guide rod 33.
