1455077 Sewing machines; needle drive SINGER CO 27 Feb 1974 [14 Feb 1973] 8759/ 74 Heading DIG The needle bar of a zig-zag sewing machine is connected to the drive through a latching mechanism so that the needle bar may be disconnected from the drive and held at the top of its stroke by a spring until reconnected. A crank and link 58, 57 (Fig. 2) drive the stud 55 (Fig. 4) to reciprocate along the needle bar 23. When the latch 48 is engaged by pivoting it anticlockwise so that latch surface 51 engages the lower surface 62 of the driving stud, the latching mechanism 42 and hence the needle 'bar to which it is attached is reciprocated. When not latched, a spring 95 biases the latching mechanism and needle bar upwards against a rod 97. When a latch release member 84 (Fig. 5) is pushed upwards by hand (using its lower protruding end 105) it moves up and to the left due to diagonal caming slots 86, 88 through which screw 85, 87 project. This movement pushes it against a lever 81 which rotates about a post 75 causing the other end of the lever (78, Figure 4) to press a lug 79 on the latch 48 to rotate the latch clockwise and hence release it. When the presser bar lever 37 (Fig. 5) is raised it contacts a presser bar guide 34 and pushes it upwards. The block in turn contacts a lug 107 on the latch release member and raises it also, thus unlatching the needle bar.
