Abstract

1373559 Cyanoacrylate adhesive; bonded laminates INTERCONTINENTAL CHEMICAL CO Ltd 11 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37493/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Adhesive bonds are formed between surfaces, particularly glass to glass or glass to rubber, using an adhesive composition containing at least one monomeric ester of 2-cyanoacrylic acid, in conjunction with at least one alkoxy or acyloxy silane of the formula X 3 Si(CH 2 ) n Y in which n represents an integer from 0 to 3, X represents a methoxy, ethoxy, methoxyethoxy, acetoxy, propionoxy, n-butyroxy or isobutyroxy group, and Y represents a chlorine atom or a vinyl, methyl, trichloromethyl, mercapto, 3,4- epoxycyclohexyl, glycidyl or amino group, or alternatively X represents an allyl group and Y represents a methoxy, ethoxy or methoxyethoxy group. The silane may be incorporated in the adhesive composition or may be applied separately in the form of a primer solution. The adhesive compositions containing the silane are novel but, in such compositions, the group represented by Y in the formula above cannot be a 3,4-epoxycyclohexyl, glycidyl or amino group, because such a silane is incompatible with the adhesive composition. The bonds formed have appreciable resistance to degradation in water and high humidity conditions. Exemplified silanes are triacetoxyvinyl silane, triethoxyvinyl silane and ethoxytriallyl silane, and methyl cyanoacrylate is exemplified as a cyanoacrylate. When used as a primer, the silane may be dissolved in water or a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent. The cyanoacrylate adhesive may contain conventional thickeners and stabilizers. [GB1373559A]
