1349302 3<SP>1</SP>-4<SP>1</SP>-Dideoxykanamycin B ZAIDAN HOJIN BISEIBUTSU KAGAKU KENKYU KAI 1 June 1973 [29 July 1970 11 May 1971] 18317/71 Heading C2A The invention comprises 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - dideoxykanamycin B of Formula IV A process for the synthesis of 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-dideoxykanamycin B starting from kanamycin B of Formula III wherein R is NH 2 - comprises protecting the amino and all or a part of the hydroxyl groups other than 3<SP>1</SP> and 4<SP>1</SP>-hydroxyl groups of kanamycin B by a conventional method, sulphonylating the 3<SP>1</SP> and 4<SP>1</SP> hydroxy groups to give a derivative having disulphonic ester groups, removing the 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-disulphonic esters by known methods to give a 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-unsaturated compound, reducing the 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-unsaturated compound and removing the residual protecting groups.
