Abstract
1280331 Making rings; winding strip as edge; shearing D C NORRIS & CO Ltd 22 July 1970 [5 May 1969] 22795/69 Headings B3A B3E and B3W Annular metal rings and part-annular components are made by winding a strip of metal S edgewise into a close-packed helical coil C, profiling the strip to compensate for the distortion which takes place during winding, and cutting the coil C to separate the individual turns. A tailstock, comprising a die block 4, a pressure plate 5 and a guide 7, is moved near a shoulder 10 and the leading edge of the strip passed through rollers 8 and guide 7 into the entry zone 121 of the die 4. The leading edge is attached to the shoulder 10 by means of a device 11 after which the die is urged into contact with the shoulder by an hydraulic accumulator 14. A mandrel 3 is then rotated so that the leading edge of the strip is drawn in from the entry zone 121 into the sizing zone 122 where the strip contacts the shoulder 10 and is compressed to give a taper which compensates for the taper produced as the strip is wound round the mandrel. Continued rotation of the mandrel completes the first turn of the coil which leaves the channel at 124 to ride over the fresh strip continuously entering the zone 122. As the number of turns increases, the die block 4, pressure plate 5 and guide 7 are forced away from the shoulder against the hydraulic loading. On reaching the desired length of coil, the mandrel is removed and the coil is cut longitudinally by a rotary saw. The coil is thus divided into separate rings, the free ends of each ring being welded or keyed together. In another embodiment the surface 12 of the die block 4 is not bounded by a radially outer edge so that the profiling takes place at the entry to the sizing zone 122 where the strip is drawn across a shallow raised edge. Shearing.-The coil is loosened and has a notch made in each turn so that on advancing the coil lengthwise, each notch passes between sensor tubes 211 and 212 and allows an air jet to pass between the sensor tubes to operate a guillotine.
