Abstract

1320578 Gas heaters WEMAC 17 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 39624/70 Headings F4F and F4T To prevent unburnt gaseous fuel escaping from the flame ports 16r of the tubes 16 of the main burner assembly 13 of a boiler or heater, a flame sensor 25 causes the main valve 27 to open only when a multi-port pilot burner 21, which extends across the main burner tubes, is lit, and causes the valve 27 to close if the main burner flame is extinguished, gas flowing to the pilot burner only for a period predetermined by a timer 21a. As shown in Fig. 5 a signal from a thermostat (not shown) closes an operating control completing a circuit which causes pilot valve 20 to open, activates the mechanism M of burner 21a, and causes the electrical igniter 18 to ignite the gas. The flame sensor 25, which is sensitive to ultra-violet radiation, is activated by the pilot flame, and the amplified signal from it causes the valve 27 to open, allowing gas to flow to the main burner to be ignited by the pilot flame. After the predetermined time (for example 10 seconds) the timer causes the pilot vave 20 to close, and simultaneously opens the vaves 27a, 27b, allowing gas to flow to the auxiliary burner assemblies 12, 14, flame being propagated to them from the main burner assembly 13 by bridging nipples 32, 33. Due to its positioning, shown in Fig. 1, the sensor 25 senses the presence of either the main burner flame or the pilot flame, so that if after the pilot flame is extinguished the main flame should also be extinguished, the valve 27 is closed.
