Abstract

1,248,709. Epoxides. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 1 April, 1970 [2 April,-1969], No. 15375/70. Heading C2C. Epoxides are produced by reacting one or more olefinic compounds with one or more organic hydroperoxides using a catalyst which is insoluble in the reaction mixture and comprising vanadium in chemical combination with a solid silica and/or inorganic silicate. The preferred olefinic starting materials are olefinic hydrocarbons having 2-10 carbon atoms, butadiene, and olefinic compounds substituted by hydroxy groups or halogens, e.g. allyl alcohol, crotyl alcohol and allyl chloride. Suitable organic hydroperoxides are those of formula ROOH in which R is a C 3 -C 20 hydrocarbon group, in particular a secondary or tertiary alkyl or an aralkyl group of 3-10 carbon atoms. Examples describe the preparation of 1-octene oxide from 1-octene and t-butylhydroperoxide. [GB1248709A]
