Abstract

1347954 Epoxidation of olefins SUN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 27 June 1972 [28 June 1971 17 Nov 1971] 29960/72 Heading C2C A process for the catalytic epoxidation of olefins with hydroperoxides comprises employing as the catalyst a metal complex of the formula MX m L n (CO) q wherein M is a Group VIII metal; X is halogen, hydrogen, CN 1 SCN, NCS, SnCl 2 , NO or when m is greater than 1 is any combination of these; L is a ligand selected from (R 3 P), (R 3 N), (R 3 As) and (R 2 S) wherein R is C 1 to C 12 lower alkyl or aryl; m is 0 or an integer of from 1 to 4; n is 0 or an integer of from 1 to 3; and q is 0 or an integer of from 1 to 3; but when n is 0, q must be at least 1; and when m is 0, either n or q must be at least 1. The process may be carried out in the presence of a solvent at a temperature of from 20‹ to 100‹ C. The mole ratio of olefin to hydroperoxide may be from 1:1 to 20 : 1. Typical olefins used in the process are styrene, pthylene, propylene, 2- methylpentene, 2-octene, cyclohexene and cyclooctene. Examples of the catalyst are
