Abstract

1,238,624. Granulated hop. HOPFENVEREDLUNG DR. A. MULLER CO. Feb. 5, 1970 [Feb. 7, 3969], No.5496/70. Heading C6E. Granulated hop comprises hop powder the particles of which are encrusted with hop extract. The hop powder may be one enriched in lupulin. The term "hop extract" is defined as the dry residue obtained by evaporating to dryness a hop solvent extract viz. an organic solvent extract containing the bitter principles or an aqueous extract of the tannins. The granulated hop has an overall particle size in the range of from 30 to 30, 000 microns and the thickness of the hop extract encrustation amounts to 10 - 10, 000 microns. The granulated hop is produced by mixing the two components by one of the several specified methods, involving mechanical mixing or attrition, blending, spraying or pneumatic agitation. The hop extract may have been moistened with water or organic solvent. Preferably the hop extract is heated to its softening temperature (between 45‹ and 70‹ C) before it is mixed with the hop powder and the mixture, after its initial formation, is suddenly cooled to a temperature of from - 1‹ C to 30‹ C. to aid granulation. Pellets of the granulated hop are obtained by applying a pressure of at least 50 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. Mention is made of ordinary mixtures of hop powder with tannin extract. [GB1238624A]
