Abstract

Organic pigments are conditioned by attrition grinding in a heavy duty masticator, a mixture of a crude dry organic pigment and an organic conditioning agent comprising a polyhydric alcohol or an ether, ester or chlorinated derivative thereof or mixtures thereof, the agent being liquid under the grinding conditions, having a solubility in water of at least 0.01% at 25 DEG C. and being present in an amount sufficient to convert the mixture into a discontinuous mass of tough, compacted, granular particles during grinding, adding water to the mixture to dissolve said agent and then separating the pigment from the resulting solution. The grinding mixture may also include a water-soluble, solid grinding acid such as an inorganic salt, urea or sugar, and insoluble, inert extenders or substrata for making extended colours or lakes. A large number of conditioning agents is specified including some which are solid at ordinary temperatures but which are molten at grinding temperatures or which may may be mixed with a small quantity of water. Examples are given.
