Abstract

1275309 Dimethyl sulphoxide GLANZSTOFF AG 11 Aug 1969 [27 Sept 1968] 40001/69 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C6-C7] In a process for the preparation of dimethyl sulphoxide by anodic oxidation of dimethyl sulphide in a cell containing dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl sulphoxide, water and one or more electrolytes, e.g. sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, the contents of the cell being maintained in practically constant concentration by continuously introducing dimethyl sulphide, water and the electrolyte or the electrolytes into the cell whilst continuously removing a portion of the electrolyte from the cell for recovery of the dimethyl sulphoxide therefrom. The process may be carried out at normal or subatmospheric pressure but is prefer. ably carried out at an excess pressure of 1-50 atmospheres. The mixture is preferably in the form of an homogenous phase; mixing being carried out by stirring or by a circulating pump. Cooling devices may be provided. The electrodes may be of plate, perforated plate, cylinder or rod form, and may be of platinum, platinized titanium, lead, hammer scale or graphite; e.g. a platinized titanium anode may be used with a graphite cathode.
