Abstract

[Also in Division Cl] During the exposure of a thread of filamentary material to pyrolysis treatment in the production of carbonaceous filamentary material therefrom, the thread is held under longitudinal tension by passing it in spaced convolutions around three or more rollers journalled to a frame to form a cage, at least one of the rollers being rotatable to draw the thread around the rollers and the rotational axes of the rollers being parallel to one another but oblique to the longitudinal axis of the cage. As illustrated, three rollers 1, 2 and 3 are arranged equidistantly from an alignment shaft 4, each roller being mounted in the frame wall at one end and on a pivotally adjustable carrier plate 7 at the other end. Angular adjustment of the plate 7 to set the axes of the rollers oblique to the axis of the cage is possible by virtue of bolts 12 which protrude through arcuate slots 13 and carry nuts 14 which lock the plate in position. A drive to effect rotation is mounted on the other ends of the rollers which extend beyond the frame. Three sets of four rollers arranged coaxially on the frame may be used, each set constituting an individual cage.
