Abstract

Toothpastes comprise a main body which is a transparent or translucent gel and a secondary body of cleaning and polishing agents contained at least partially within the main body. The secondary body may be in the form of a core or cores surrounded by the main body or of a stripe or stripes (which may be coloured) partially contained within the main body with a portion of the surface of the stripe, (or each stripe) exposed at the surface of the main body. The main and secondary bodies preferably have rheological properties which are matched. The main body may be a gel containing water, humectant (such as glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol or a polyethylene glycol), detergent, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, sweetening agent such as saccharin, flavour (e.g. peppermint, spearment and/or aniseed oils), preservative, and thickening agent (such as carageenates, alginates, carboxyvinyl polymer, cellulose ethers and esters, or colloidal silica). The secondary body contains an abrasive such as chalk, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, calcium pyrophosphate, alumina, polyvinyl chloride or polymethyl methacrylate.
