Abstract

Dentifrices, which may be in the form of toothpastes, toothpowders, dental creams, dental lozenges, dental tablets or mouthwashes, contain tylosin, or an acid-addition salt thereof, and/or desmycosin, or an acid-addition salt thereof, as an antimicrobial agent, together with a flavouring agent. The dentifrices may be formulated using aqueous solutions of the acid salts or solutions of the free base in aqueous ethanol or other non-toxic solvent e.g. diethylacetamide, or dimethyl sulphoxide. Suspensions of the antimicrobial agent in water, and aqueous glycerine, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and Irish moss may be used. The dentifrices may contain conventional water-insoluble polishing agents e.g. di- and tri-calcium phosphates including dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, calcium carbonate, calcium pyrophosphate, calcium sulphate, insoluble sodium metaphosphate, alumina, hydrated alumina, magnesium carbonate, bentonite, or mixtures thereof. Dental cream formulations may be based on water, glycerine, aqueous solutions of sorbitol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol 400, or mixtures thereof, and may contain a gelling agent such as a natural or synthetic gum or gum-like material e.g. gum tragacanth, or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Anionic, cationic, non-ionic, or ampholytic surface active agents, of which many examples are given, may also be included in the dentifrice preparations. Other ingredients include colouring or whitening agents, e.g. TiO2, preservatives, e.g. sodium benzoate, silicones, chlorophyll compounds, ammoniated materials e.g. urea, mono- or di-ammonium phosphate, or mixtures thereof, antibacterial agents e.g. N1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N5-(2, 4-dichlorobenzyl)-biguanide, p-chlorophenyl biguanide, 4-chlorobenzhydryl biguanide, 4-chlorobenzhydrylguanylurea, N-3-lauroxypropyl-N5-p-chloro benzylbiguanide, 1, 6-di-p-chlorophenylbiguanidohexane, 1-(lauryldimethylammonium) 8-(p-chlorobenzyldimethylammonium) octane dichloride, 5, 6-dichloro-2-guanidinobenzimidazole, N1-p-chlorophenyl-N5-laurylbiguanide, 5-amino-1, 3-bis (2-ethyl-hexyl)-5-methylhexahydropyrimidine, or their non-toxic acid addition salts, and therapeutic fluorine-containing compounds e.g. NaF, KF, SnF2, SnF2.KF, sodium hexafluorostannate, stannous chlorofluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate.
